First Fossil Record for the Diamondback Terrapin, Malaclemys Terrapin (emydidae), and Comments on the Fossil Record of Chrysemys Nelsoni (emydidae)

چکیده
A nuchal bone and a first left costal bone from two different individuals represent the first fossil record for the diamondback terrapin, Malaclemys terrapin. The bones are from a Pleistocene deposit at Edisto Beach, Colleton County, South Carolina, a locality that is within the present range of M. terrapin. Fossil Chrysemys nelsoni recovered from the same deposit indicate that the ranges of Chrysemys nelsoni and Chrysemys rubriventris were probably once continuous and that gene flow between the two "species" may have occurred as recently as late Pleistocene.

Diamondback Terrapin Mortality in the American Eel Pot Fishery and Evaluation of a Bycatch Reduction Device
The effect of commercial fisheries on nontarget species is a burgeoning issue for both fishery managers and estuarine biologists. We documented diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) bycatch in cloth-funnel eel pots used in a Maryland (United States) commercial American eel (Anguilla rostrata) fishery. Between 1992 and 2001, we obtained 40 male and 9 female terrapin captures and 1 male terr...
متن کاملIntroduced delicacy or native species? A natural origin of Bermudian terrapins supported by fossil and genetic data.
Humans have greatly altered the natural distribution of species, making it difficult to distinguish between natural and introduced populations. This is a problem for conservation efforts because native or introduced status can determine whether a species is afforded protection or persecuted as an invasive pest. Holocene colonization events are especially difficult to discern, particularly when ...
متن کاملTemperature-dependent aromatase expression in developing diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) embryos.
In the diamondback terrapin, Malaclemys terrapin, males hatch at incubation temperatures below 28 degrees C whereas females hatch at temperatures above 30 degrees C. When estrogen is applied to the eggs at male temperatures early in development, females are produced. These data suggest that the enzyme necessary for estrogen synthesis (CYP19, aromatase) in the developing gonad plays a critical r...
متن کاملUrea and osmoregulation in the diamondback terrapin Malaclemys centrata centrata (Latreille).
The diamondback terrapin, Malaclemys centrata centrata (Latreille), is a thoroughly aquatic turtle living in salt and brackish marshes and estuaries. From its habitat, it is obvious that this animal has to contend with various osmotic conditions. Bentley, Bretz & Schmidt-Nielsen (1967) and just recently Dunson (1969) have already investigated the problem of the salt and water balance in that sp...
متن کاملSpatial variation in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations in eggs of diamondback terrapins, Malaclemys terrapin, from the Patuxent River, Maryland.
Aquatic organisms encounter a number of contaminants in their environments. Here, we report polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations detected in diamondback terrapin eggs collected from the Patuxent River, Maryland, one year after an oil spill. Data suggested a geographic difference in egg hydrocarbon concentrations. However, at one year after the oil spill, most PAH concentrations ...
